The Lineage of XLIM and SAN SAN GEAR

Written by Ali George Hinkins
Since they first graced This Thing of Ours’ physical and digital shelves, XLIM and SAN SAN GEAR have been on an upward trajectory. Collectively, and in their own right, they continue to affirm themselves amongst a growing scene of technically-minded designers and brands.

Emerging from Seoul, South Korea, in the late 2010s, before the world embarked on a shared rollercoaster ride, XLIM and SAN SAN GEAR operate at opposite ends of the spectrum despite their shared home base. Currently, South Korea is one of the biggest exporters of function-oriented brands, listing names like CAYL and J EONGLI I as some of its key players among those mentioned before.

SAN SAN GEAR embodies a playful attitude in its visuals and its offerings are often streamlined and function-focused, from the silhouette to their features. The best way to describe SAN SAN GEAR’s approach to wardrobe design is a technical uniform that can be worn to the office without looking out of place while providing adequate functionality should the wearer decide to go for a post-work hike or be caught in inclement weather. Smarter shirting and outerwear options exist alongside toned-down lightweight t-shirts and ergonomic bottoms. Its Spring/Summer ‘24 collection, ‘Scope’, was highlighted in a not-so-stereotypical office environment, but one that was balanced and showcased the versatility of its wares.

In contrast, XLIM presents its design interpretation, attracting those looking for experimental technical clothing that blends traditional materials and textures with more unconventional ones, from waffle-grid fleece to corduroy. Its nuance doesn’t end there either with showrooms during fashion week frequently showered with a kaleidoscope of colour from XLIM’s garments, from pink to indigo and yellow. XLIM is one of those labels that truly reveals its character as you slowly pore over each detail with a fine tooth comb. Headed up by designer and stylist Do Hee Kim, XLIM is surrounded by forward-thinking and progressive creatives who aren’t content with developing ordinary technical clothing.

Design maestros in their own right, XLIM AND SAN SAN GEAR bring their nuanced takes on technical clothing to This Thing of Ours and its customers, providing a balanced offering that is far from ordinary.
