New Brands from Japan - Still by Hand and Fujito
It's a pretty special day when we get a delivery of new product at This Thing Of Ours. We wouldn't be working so hard to make this business work if we didn't get excited about the thought of fresh product. Finding all the little details that make a product special versus the average high street fodder is definitely something we to look forward to.
So you can imagine we pretty much wet ourselves last week when not one but two deliveries from Japan landed on the same day. If that wasn't enough they were for two completely new brands to the store, Still by Hand and Fujito.
Still by Hand and Fujito are both brands we've been aware of and wanted to work with for some time. They have a detailed yet simple aesthetic that is just perfect for a multitude of occasions. It's really wearable stuff that the detail nerds can get excited about but that equally, just looks great. We tend to have a bit of an outdoor, athletic, military & workwear slant to the store because those are the things we like to wear but sometimes we need to smarten up a bit and Still by Hand and Fujito perfectly balances the line of clothing that's cool enough for your mates to be jealous of, but that you can wear comfortably on a date or family occasion without raising eyebrows (Aunty Doris never does seem that interested in my Spectra Fabric Waterproof Smock).
Still by Hand say that they deliver clothing that is simple and yet detailed and we tend to agree. It's ridiculously well made stuff that oozes a sense of quality without being show off. At first glance it is simple but the details are there for a knowing eye to see. We particularly love the hidden pocket on this beautiful Stand Collar Anorak, again, the detail appears simple but this is only because of how well thought out it is. Something that works so well that you no longer think about it. A sign of real quality and craftsmanship that not many brands can match.
Fujito is the brainchild of designer Go Fujito who ultimately wants his clothes to feel comfortable and relaxing. Designed to be worn casually and with a sporty feel Fujito clothing is all made in Japan. In fact about 75% of the total collection is made in Kyushu in southern Japan close to Fujito's home. This closeness allows for a control over the details of production that few other brands have access to in these days of global production. Fujito is able to work face to face with the craftsman that produce his garments and as such is in constant dialogue utilising their skills and his feedback to produce the best garments possible.
Our absolute favourite product from SS20 is this incredible Linen Pullover Parka or Smock. It comes in two colours a sage green and the most incredible Nut Brown colour. Made from a 100% cotton linen its an incredibly versatile piece that is light enough for summer but that can be worn layered through many months of the year. Utilising local dying techniques and fabrics takes this pullover parka to the next level.
