An Overview of nanamica’s Autumn/Winter ‘22 Collection
Written by Ali George Hinkins
Commandeered by Eiichiro Homma, the Japanese label nanamica is renowned for designing garments that prioritise comfort and functionality, a combination that has long been poorly executed by technical clothing brands. Since its inception in 2003, the designs have remained highly practical and functional without sacrificing style - their aesthetic is instantly recognisable and ‘nanamica-esque’ which is in part thanks to the relatively muted colour palette of soft greens, navy blues and black taking precedent. Alongside that, unlike some other brands occupying a similar space, nanamica doesn’t feel the need to constantly release a new product, instead, they take each season like a software update, tweaking and refining certain styles to make them appropriate for their given environment.
For this season, in particular, Autumn/Winter ‘22, they haven’t lost sight of those early fundamentals that have paved the way through all of these years. Continuing with the theme of ‘Once Ocean, All Lands’ - a sign of interconnectivity and unity -, tones of blue, black, grey, green and brown tones prevail throughout the collection with each garment having its own purpose whether that be at home, at the office or in urban settings; this is achieved through the clever use of fabrics and ergonomic construction. As a whole, the range consists of outerwear silhouettes, bottoms, knitwear, shirting and many more pieces of a technical nature. Some of the standouts include GORE-TEX clad outerwear that shields the wearer from the worst the season has to throw at them, as well as adjustable technical belts and pocket-laden cargo pants - all of which are available at This Thing of Ours alongside the Bandana and GORE-TEX Infinium Beanie Hat. Each piece comes across as subtle but the underlying functionalities say otherwise. For example, the GORE-TEX Down Coat offers protection from the rain and cold thanks to its clever fabric composition whilst the Cargo Trousers offer plenty of storage as they feature a number of easy-to-access pockets.
