New Brand Alert: XLIM Episode 03.
Written by Ali George Hinkins
Founded a mere 2 years ago in 2021, XLIM is a nouveau technical brand from South Korea headed up by designer and stylist, Do Hee Kim. After teasing the label in the weeks leading up to its release, XLIM’s debut came by way of its Spring/Summer ‘21 collection that was defined by striking colours and careful detailing - two pillars that remain at the crux of XLIM.
There is definitely something in the water with the new crop of technical designers. Whether it’s Jean-Luc of _j.l_a.l_ or Do Hee Kim of XLIM, they are carrying the scene with a youthful perspective and a renewed sense of ingenuity. As far as the present and future are concerned, there is plenty to look forward to.
Since its inception, XLIM has been flying the flag for an emerging scene of Korean designers and brands that are intent on shaking up the status quo of fashion. Not defining itself in anyway and leaving it up to our interpretation, XLIM’s aesthetic exists somewhere between technical and luxury - in a sort-of grey area that has yet to be explored, until now. Their creations, like the Vest Jacket from EP.3, live up to their name by utilising carbon coated fabrics, for example, to give off a wax finish without adding additional weight to the garment that you would have if it were waxed or leather, per se. Each design is a testament to the highly detailed and meticulous approach they take, as exemplified in their pattern cutting and choice of materials which are exciting and fresh.
This Thing of Ours offering of XLIM includes a myriad of styles from ‘Episode 03.’ - a new-found take on the fashion calendar - including technical outerwear, tops, shorts, headwear and lighter jackets. While the designated garment names don’t give much away, the proof is in the pudding and it is best experienced through seeing them in person.
Available to purchase now exclusively from This Thing of Ours’ online store and physical location.
