The Latest from Merely Made Autumn/Winter ‘22

The word ‘merely’ doesn’t come close to describing Merely Made’s first delivery at This Thing of Ours. Instead, I think that it’s fair to say that it goes beyond ‘just another’ collection from the South Korean collective whose mantra revolves around well-crafted articles of clothing that strike a hardy balance between quality, innovation and modernity. 

To the untrained eye, Merely Made might just look like another brand whose output is confined to legwear, shirting and two-piece sweats, but, as is often the case, the little details and finishes elevate them to a higher plane of existence. Cropped silhouettes, high-quality Japanese fabrics, well-placed darting and convenient pockets are just some examples of their knack for design which goes beyond the ordinary. 

A regular recipient of Merely Made gear, This Thing of Ours’ has welcomed in a plethora of styles that are appropriate for Autumn/Winter ‘22, including relaxed fit bottoms, cropped shirts, cosy sweatshirts and coordinating bottoms, and a longsleeve tee. In an unconventional sense, if we start from the bottom-up, we can look at their selection of legwear which features the Relaxing Wide Pants, Nomadic Pants and Jogger Pants. By selecting heavier fabrics for the construction of those mentioned before, each pair of trousers has a lovely weight and structure to them. Finishing touches round off said garment, such as a rear pocket, sunglasses pocket and zip-fly opening. Keeping the aforementioned company is a balance of cosy-meets-casual in the form of the Merely Sweatshirt, Oversized Hoodie, Merely Cropped Shirt and Longsleeve Tee. Arguably, the Cropped Shirt is a standout from the drop as it adheres to a wide and cropped silhouette that abides by Merely Made’s forward-thinking philosophy; I have a feeling this one won’t hang around very long. It has been constructed using a two-tone melange polyester twill fabric from Japan called ‘Vancet’. Providing some well-needed contrast, the Oversized Hoodie and Sweatshirt are both made using an incredibly soft 100% cotton jersey material that has the feel of, ‘stroking your body with a baby chinchilla’. Like many of the other garments I’ve touched on, these two adopt a similar wide fit through the body.
